Human Rights Program

It is now widely acknowledged that “democracy, development and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms are interdependent and mutually reinforcing.” As such, it is the duty of individuals and groups of individuals to speak out when human rights are violated by the actions of the state or other actors within society. The Association for Democratic Initiatives recognizes its role as a non-governmental organization is to advocate monitor and advance human rights as a core value of every democratic society. ADI works to guarantee that no individual or group is marginalized or excluded on the basis of ethnicity, gender, race, language, religion, disability or other distinction in the development of Macedonia and Southeast Europe, this is to guarantee that the conflicts of the past are not repeated.

The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government. — Thomas Jefferson

ADI’s activities within its Human Rights Program include collecting information about human rights abasement, translating and disseminating relevant reports, documents and books from the field of human rights into local languages, and organizing seminars and workshops on respective international/national instruments and institutions that deal with the issues of human rights and human rights protection. ADI also participates in drafting national shadow reports concerning the implementation by government institutions of different treaties and other obligations in the field of human rights. These obligations include protecting human rights, raising awareness of the importance of respecting human rights in accordance with international law, and advocating to different governmental institutions to ensure that human rights are protected.

Finally, ADI continues to participate in international events related to human rights and development. For example, ADI was involved as an accredited organization in the World Conference Against Racism in Durban, both in the preparatory process of the conference and in the conference itself, and the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
