Past Democracy & Civil Society

Civil society is a critical component to creating democratic governance and peacefully resolving conflict. Civil society also fosters dialogue, cooperation and partnerships among diverse groups and individuals, which strengthens democracy. This requires that citizens and governments alike understand the foundations, institutions and practices of their democracy if they ever wish to create positive change. In addition, incorporating the values of trust and tolerance between diverse groups creates a greater likelihood that solutions to important political, social and economic issues can be found. The Association for Democratic Initiatives supports citizens, groups and NGOs in building their capacity as we recognize that a diverse and effective civil society is an integral element of a healthy democracy. ADI also promotes the involvement of citizens in the decision-making process and works with local self-government institutions to ensure their practices are transparent, accountable, representative and inclusive.

In this possibly terminal phase of human existence, democracy and freedom are more than just ideals to be valued – they may be essential to survival. — Noam Chomsky

ADI has established three NGO resource centers in Gostivar, Tetovo and Stip. The centers offer computer classes, language courses and legal advisory services. Volunteer organizations are also invited to use the technical equipment and facilities free of charge. The ADI Centers offer professional advice to individuals or groups of citizen volunteers who are interested in civic initiatives. ADI volunteers include accountants, doctors, economists, lawyers, teachers who donate their professional services to the Centers.

ADI has launched projects which aim to introduce councilors (elected under the new law for self-governance), with their legal obligations and authority and organized seminars and conferences both on a national and international level, to present best practices, facilitate the transfer of knowledge and introduce new initiatives for regional cooperation between the representatives of local governments in Southeast Europe. Finally, ADI administers projects that encourage better cooperation between local government representatives, the media and NGOs.
